Alternative to Work Hours

Criteria for education alternatives:

  • Graduate programs (Master's, PhD, DNP) dedicated to the field of Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) can be used in lieu of 3000 work hours. These programs MUST include a semester/quarter of practical experience and an occupational health related project. The degree must be completed within the five-year period prior to application.
  • Bachelor and 1 year Certificate programs dedicated to OEHS may be used for 2000 hours of work experience. These programs have basic industry content with limited or no practical experience and are considered equivalent to one year of graduate study. These programs must be completed within the five-year period prior to application.

If you choose to use education in lieu of work hours, you must submit your transcripts with your application.**Due to variations in program content over time, ABOHN reviews programs annually and determines each applicant's acceptance on a case-by-case basis.

If your program is not listed and you believe it meets ABOHN's criteria, please contact the ABOHN office prior to application. The Committee will research your program to see if it complies with the ABOHN content criteria.
