ABOHN offers the following credentials, COHN(Certified Occupational Health Nurse) or the COHN-S(Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist); the COHN/CM (Certified Occupational Health Nurse/Case Manager) or the COHN-S/CM (Certified Occupational Health Nurses-Specialist/Case Manager; and the Certified Occupational Health Nurse/Safety Manager COHN/SM or the Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist/Safety Manager COHN-S/SM).

The COHN is offered to those registered nurses with associate, diploma or higher degrees or their international equivalent. The focus of this credential is on the nurse’s role as a clinician; it also reflects the nurse’s role as advisor, coordinator and case manager.  The COHN-S is offered to those occupational health nurses with a baccalaureate or higher degree and reflects the nurse’s role in direct care, management, education, consulting, and case management.  Any baccalaureate is acceptable as the degree requirement for this credential.

  • 3,000 hours in occupational health in the past five years; or

  • a completion of a certificate program in occupational health nursing for academic credit.

  • 3,000 hours in occupational health in the past five years; or

  • a completion of a certificate program in occupational health nursing for academic credit; or

  • a completion of a Master's level of education with a concentration in occupational health.

The criteria for eligibility are set by the ABOHN Board of Directors who approve candidates for the examination. It is ABOHN policy that no individual shall be excluded from the opportunity to participate in the ABOHN certification program on the basis of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, or disability.
