After three years of information gathering, deliberation, and development, an ABOHN Safety Management credential for certified occupational health nurses is being offered to COHN or COHN-S certified occupational health nurses with safety responsibilities.  ABOHN worked in collaboration with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) to produce an examination that was validated through the 2004 practice analysis study to represent the significant knowledge, skills and abilities of occupational health nurses with safety responsibilities. The computer-based examination is delivered at Pearson VUE testing centers throughout the U.S. and around the world.  The examination consists of 250 examination questions.

Eligibility requirements include:

• a COHN or COHN-S core credential
• current position with at least 25% safety activities
• 50 contact hours of safety-related continuing education
• and 1000 hours of experience in the most recent five years.

A Certification Self-Assessment Test is available and may be purchased for $95 by completing and submitting the credit card form or by downloading and faxing the form to 630-789-8901. ABOHN’s goal in development of this credential is to provide evidence of competency for certified occupational health nurses in a safety role and to promote career opportunities and professional advancement in health and safety.

This ABOHN credential recognizes certified occupational health nurses who have expanded their practice into safety and may provide a career path to the Certified Safety Professional® (CSP®) credential. ABOHN's Safety Management specialty credential allows those who apply for and pursue the CSP to achieve a waiver of BCSP's Safety Fundamentals examination. Applicants for the CSP must meet all other requirements for earning the CSP credential. For more information on the CSP designation, go to the BCSP website at www.bcsp.org

Safety Management Examination

ABOHN's Safety Management examination may be taken at any of the national Pearson VUE computer testing centers. The application fee is $125 and the exam fee is $275. An annual fee of $100 will be required to maintain the credential and will be pro-rated for the first year of certification.
