ABOHN offers four awards associated with the certification testing. 

 

Mayrose Snyder Excellence in Occupational Health Nursing Award.

This prestigious award is presented annually to the occupational health nurse who receives the highest score on the previous year’s Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S) certification examination.

This award was established in 1989 to honor the former ABOHN Executive Director, Mayrose Snyder, for her many contributions to the development and expansion of ABOHN and the occupational credentialing process. 

The 2008 MAYROSE SNYDER EXCELLENCE AWARD is presented to:

Marguerite Ahern Graff Excellence in Occupational Health Nursing Award

This award is presented annually to the occupational health nurse who receives the highest score on the previous year's Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) certification examination.

This award was established in 1997 to honor ABOHN 's first chair, Marguerite Ahern Graff, for her tireless devotion to the development of the criteria for ABOHN examinations.

Ada Mayo Stewart Excellence in Occupational Health Case Management
Award  

This prestigious award is presented annually by the American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN) to the individual who achieved the highest score on the previous year’s Case Management certification examination. 

This award was established in January 2000 to honor Ada Mayo Stewart.   In 1895, Ms. Stewart was one of the first industrial health nurses in the United States.  Her practice at the Vermont Marble Company involved many facets of occupational health case management.  She worked in the clinic, provided health education for employees and their families and made home visits.  She was the first case manager in occupational health nursing as we know it today.

The 2008 ADA MAYO STEWART CASE MANAGEMENT AWARD is presented to:

Bliss L. Dickerson, RN, COHN/CM

 

DEBRA L. FISCHER GIBBON SAFETY MANAGEMENT AWARD

This award is presented annually to the occupational health nurse who receives the highest score on the previous year’s American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN) Safety Management (SM) certification exam.   

This award has been established to honor Debra Lynn Fisher Gibbon, a former Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S) and Certified Safety Professional (CSP), who lost her life on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, 2001.  A senior vice president for AON Risk Services, Ms. Gibbon coordinated services for the company’s top clients.   “She was one of those people who would walk into a room and people would listen to what she had to say.  She inspired confidence, even in strangers.” Ms. Gibbon worked for 17 years in the area of occupational health and safety. 

 

The 2008 DEBRA L. FISCHER GIBBON SAFETY MANAGEMENT AWARD is presented to:

Sharon L. Verkuilen, RN, BSN, COHN-S/CM/SM

 

OTHER AWARDS OFFERED BY ABOHN:

The first Vendor of the Year Award will be presented to Edwards Medical Supply at the annual ABOHN reception and celebration for certified occupational health nurses in Salt Lake City, UT.

 

Application for the Employer Recognition Award

 

The ABOHN Research Award is available for research related to some aspect of certification that is in progress or has a been completed within one year.   Up to $5,000 is available yearly.  Applicants must be: 1.) a certified OHN; or 2.) an RN working with a certified OHN.  ABOHN will support the winners' projects(s) by providing available data, labels and lists at the American Association Symposium and Exposition.

INNOVATIONS IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AWARD

The purpose of the award is to recognize individual occupational health nurses or OHN teams for their innovative ideas in the delivery services. Sponsored by ABOHN and AAOHN, and funded by Whole Health Management, it is the hope of all three organizations that this award will motivate and inspire OHNs to demonstrate and share their best and most effective ideas.  Applicants for the award must be either certified as a COHN or COHN-S or a member of AAOHN.

Criteria for the award are:

  • Development and demonstration of an idea with proven specific, measurable results
  • Outcomes targeted toward health care delivery for individual clients or groups, or administration/management of a health care delivery system
  • Contribution to the health care goals of the company and to the bottom line
  • Originality and creativity
  • Demonstration of, or potential for, sustainability
  • Applicability to other industries or occupational health settings.

Application forms for the INNOVATIONS IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AWARD are available upon request through the AAOHN office and the application deadline is December 1st. Recognition will be made in the form of a $2,500 cash award to the nurse or group of nurses who submit the best idea.
